Migraines and headaches are unpleasant but common conditions that most people have experienced at least once in their lives. For some people they can be debilitating and have a significant impact on normal daily life and routines.
Migraines and headaches are classified into two categories: Primary and Secondary.
Primary headaches can occur due to a response from the part of the brain that communicates pain signals. They are generally not a sign of a more serious underlying issue.
Examples of primary headaches are:
Cluster headaches – a patient can feel acute pain around an eye and on one side of the head and this can occur multiple times in a day.
Migraine headaches – a throbbing or pulsing sensation can be felt usually on one side of the head.
Tension headaches – one of the most common types in which sufferers describe a steady ache. Tension headaches generally affect both sides of the head.
Secondary headaches can occur due to an underlying health condition such as an ear infection, nasal congestion, dehydration or a neck injury. It can also be a sign of a more serious disease or condition such as a tumour. It is always recommended to discuss any symptoms with your general practitioner.
Acupuncture can be a possible treatment in the management and relief of different types of migraines and headaches. A 2016 study concluded that incorporating acupuncture into a migraine or headache treatment plan may reduce the frequency of migraines and headaches.
