Eat a balanced dietresearch confirms that ‘consumption of trans fatty acids, refined carbohydrates, and added sugars negatively affects female fertility’.

Recommended foods include: 

  • Vegetables & Fruit 
  • Whole-grain breads and pasta, rice and cereals 
  • Legumes, eggs and dairy products 
  • Low-fat dairy 

Drink water to keep hydrated – drink 8-10 cups of water per day as this helps the kidneys to flush toxins from the body and maximise the health of reproductive organs. 

Exercise moderately  – maintain a regular and moderate exercise routine, but don’t overdo it as too much exercise can affect ovulation as per research from 2023.

Aim to maintain a healthy weightResearch shows that ‘weight plays a significant role in fertility, therefore; maintaining a healthier weight will help to prevent hormonal imbalance which adversely affects fertility’.

Limit or avoid alcohol –  drinking heavily has been linked to issues with ovulation so if you are trying to get pregnant abstaining from alcohol is the best choice.  

Limit caffeinestudies have shown that caffeine ‘affects the nervous system and various other organs including the reproductive system… and it interrupts egg fertilisation and implantation process.’

Don’t smoke – smoking has been linked to lower fertility and its best to avoid smoking in all cases to avoid negative effects on your health. 

Ensure you are getting enough rest and relaxation timeresearch suggests that ‘anxiety and depression could activate an inhibitory effect on the female reproductive system.’

Keep track of your iron levels – get your iron levels checked via a blood test and discuss your levels with your GP.  If they are on the lower side you could consider taking iron supplements.
