Pregnancy acupuncture is a traditional form of Chinese medicine based on the philosophy that channels called meridians run through the body and control the flow of energy or Qi. (pronounced Chi). According to Chinese medicine principles, inserting sterile needles into certain parts of the body can remove obstructions from the meridian channels and return the body to balance and improve overall well-being.
Dr Sharlane will ensure that pregnant patients will feel relaxed, calm and comfortable during every interaction. After a comprehensive consultation, Dr Sharlane will discuss and implement the best pregnancy acupuncture treatment plan to assist with any concerns that may be affecting your pregnancy.
Chinese medicine and acupuncture philosophy view the body as a connected entity. Dr Sharlane will ask a variety of questions so that she understands and is aware of any underlying factor that may be affecting your pregnancy.
These may include:
We understand that you could be heavily pregnant and feel some unease about being uncomfortable during treatment. Dr Sharlane will ensure that you are well cared for during the treatment and you will be placed in a position that is comfortable for you and your body.
Pregnancy acupuncture is a natural and holistic therapy that can act as a complementary treatment, alongside western medicine. Research suggests that it “may be a safe therapeutic modality for relieving discomfort without an adverse delivery outcome.”
With pregnancy acupuncture there is no need to ingest any medication which is beneficial for women that are experiencing pregnancy sickness and nausea.
At AcuHealth Therapies we are passionate about providing the best possible outcome for both mother and baby. When seeking pregnancy acupuncture treatment you should always consult with an experienced and skilled practitioner. With over 15 years of experience working with expectant mothers, Dr Sharlane understands both the physical and mental challenges that can arise and how pregnancy acupuncture can be tailored to maximise your well-being.
Pregnancy acupuncture has been known to be beneficial for a variety of conditions related to pregnancy. Dr Sharlane has worked with many patients over the years who have needed assistance with nausea, breech, birth preparation and labour induction.
A 2009 study suggests that acupuncture may assist with the management of some complaints during pregnancy.
Dr Sharlane is highly experienced in treating patients who are experiencing nausea or sickness, headaches, muscle aches or back pain during pregnancy.
Dr Sharlane has worked with many women who have presented with a baby malpositioned (in breech position). Most of the successful patient outcomes have occurred when treatment starts between 35 to 38 weeks.
A 2018 study concluded that “acupuncture applied at term of pregnancy seems to be effective in reducing the rate of labor induction which is performed for prolonged pregnancy at 41 + 5 weeks.”
Induction acupuncture can assist during the final stage of pregnancy by enabling the body and mind to relax, reducing stress and anxiety and by boosting endorphins.
Induction acupuncture can be a natural alternative which does not involve the need to take medication. Dr Sharlane can recommend Chinese herbal medicine to support any expectant mothers. Any recommendation will always be made in consultation with you and Dr Sharlane will ensure that you understand all of the ingredients that are contained within any herbal prescription.
If you have become pregnant, we recommend that you schedule a weekly acupuncture treatment. This may vary depending on your health history and individual circumstances.
First trimester acupuncture treatments commonly focus on early pregnancy signs and symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, stress, low energy levels.
Second trimester acupuncture treatments are less often and generally only occur if there are certain concerns that Dr Sharlane needs to address. Monthly or six weekly appointments are recommended if the expectant mother is feeling well.
Third trimester acupuncture treatments focus on birth preparation. At around 32-34 weeks, Dr Sharlane advises weekly acupuncture to prepare you physically and emotionally forbirth and to promote spontaneous labour.
