Chinese Herbal Medicine Melbourne

Chinese herbal medicine is a key component of traditional Chinese medicine and is often used as part of a tailored acupuncture treatment plan. For thousands of years, Chinese medicine practitioners have used a variety of medicinal herbs and substances to treat various conditions.

AcuHealth Therapies provides high quality Chinese herbal medicine in Melbourne in many different forms, including patented pills and concentrated powdered capsules, herbal pads and ointments.

What is Chinese herbal medicine?

Chinese herbal medicine applies a holistic approach to help promote healing and optimal health. Traditionally plant, mineral and animal sources were used but in recent times plants, roots, flowers , barks and minerals are more commonly used to address specific health issues.

At AcuHealth Therapies, we don’t use, supply, condone or support the trade of any endangered animal or plant species.

What to expect from a Chinese herbal medicine consultation

Our approach to prescribing Chinese herbal medicine follows the same guidelines as our approach to overall patient care – we take time to get to know each patient and their individual circumstances & symptoms during an initial consultation.

When making a diagnosis, Dr Sharlane may ask about your family medical history, lifestyle factors such as diet, exercise and quality of sleep or other factors such as emotional health or any current medications you have been prescribed.

Examination of certain parts of the body such as the pulse, abdomen or tongue may also form part of the process with the patient providing information on any specific concerns.

Once a diagnosis is made, a customised treatment plan is put in place that follows the principles of traditional Chinese medicine.
The Chinese herbs that are prescribed are selected to improve a patient’s overall health and may ease any specific conditions that a patient has.

How is Chinese herbal medicine prescribed?

Once a diagnosis is made a specific herbal formula will be prescribed. We recommend taking Chinese herbs for at least a month to determine if any overall improvements and differences in the condition can be noticed.

For new patients to AcuHealth Therapies we will dispense 2 weeks worth of herbs so that you can establish how your body reacts to the formula and avoid any potential side effects – the likelihood of side effects is minimal so this is a precautionary measure in most cases.

How is Chinese herbal medicine administered?

Treatment formulas that are prescribed are generally taken orally and can be in capsule or powder form and in some cases raw herbs are boiled or cooked and taken as a tea or herbal brew.

Animal welfare concerns in Chinese herbal medicine

At Acuhealth Therapies we understand that some patients have ethical beliefs or dietary concerns that restrict them from consuming animal products. Plant-based treatments can be prescribed in those cases.
